Wisconsin Green Party Seeking Candidates for Local Office

YOU could be a candidate for local office this Spring!

The Wisconsin Green Party is seeking candidates for local offices across Wisconsin, including City Councils, School Boards, County Boards, Town Boards and Village Boards. The Wisconsin Green Party has a long history of Greens running for local office and serving once elected. Over 48 Greens across the state have served in elected positions over the years.

The Spring Election cycle began Dec 1, which is the first day candidates can file to run for local offices in the Spring. For most races between 50 and 200 signatures is all that is needed to get on the ballot.

Notable dates:

December 1, 2009 – first day to file as a candidate and begin
collecting signatures
January 5, 2010 – nomination papers must be turned in to your school
liaison or municipal/county clerk by 5 p.m.
February 16, 2010 – Spring Primary, if necessary
April 6, 2010 – Spring Election

Why should Greens run for local non-partisan office? Green values can be applied locally far more easily than nationally. Green values can positively impact our local community in a way that the federal government never could.

sustainable land use
sustainable planning and zoning
urban and rural agriculture
greenhouse gas mitigation
poverty and social justice initiatives
shoreland restoration
water conservation
energy efficiency
regulating use of herbicides and pesticides
“Buy Local” programs
local currency programs
local food movements
urban forestry
grassroots democracy
neighborhood empowerment
green transportation such as bike and pedestrian plans

These are just some of the ways that Green Values can be applied
locally in a positive and healthy way.

If you have questions about what offices are up for election in your
area, or questions about what it takes to run for local office, or if
you are interested in joining other Wisconsin Greens running for local
non-partisan office this Spring please contact:

On-your-own potlucks for dinner every night with access to the kitchen facilities for cooking and there will be plenty of people willing to share! Lodge includes large institutional kitchen facilities & two large meeting areas. The park offers hiking to caves and Indian burial mounds as well as star gazing, canoeing, bird watching, volleyball (how about a state v. state challenge?) and/or relaxing by the river. There will be for fun for the whole family! This gathering is meant to have more free time than "meetings" and we openly encourage Greens with children to come and expect plenty of play time. Children 17 and under are half price, children 5 and under are free of charge (please indicate children when registering). Games and activities will be organized on site among interested parties.

Pets are not allowed at the Wyalusing Indoor Group Camp or Lodge, but are okay in your own tent camping area.

We are keeping costs to you as low as possible, so we need your help! We will need everyone to chip in somewhere - either with food preparations (especially with the vegan meals!), meal clean up, and especially cleaning the buildings before the Sunday checkout time.

DIRECTIONS: Wyalusing State Park is located just south of Prairie du Chien, WI. Take County C west, off Hwy 18/35 for two miles and turn south (right) on County Hwy X for 3/4 mile. Park entrance is on your right.

Oshkosh - Tony Palmeri & Bob Poeschl Elected to Oshkosh Common Council

Support Pete Karas for Mayor of Racine

Informal local polls show that Pete Karas is one of three candidates (out of 11) likely to do well in the April 7th primary for Mayor of Racine, Wisconsin, a city of 80,000. The top two candidates will advance to a head-to-head election in May.

Pete was elected 3 times to serve on the Racine City Council. He is a great Green leader with intelligence, energy, and experience.

His campaign for clean, publicly-owned power, green jobs and community-based economics would transform Racine into a model for future-focused development.

Will you make a donation to Pete's campaign?

For every $25 you give, his campaign can buy 200 pieces of literature.

Pete is a great Green leader with integrity, intelligence and experience. We are proud to support him and hope you do too.

On the morning of December 10, 2008, Cindy Sheehan, Nelson Valdes, Saul Landau, and I signed a declaration as the U.S. delegates to an international conference assessing sixty years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights sponsored by the Network of Networks in Defense of Humanity. Here is our declaration:

We celebrate sixty years of failure. Human rights have been converted from a noble goal into an instrument of foreign policy used by rich and powerful nations against the poorest and weakest people of the world.
